This research examines the detrimental effects of poor sleep quality on maladaptive hoarding behavior, which can disrupt daily functioning and lead to various negative consequences. We propose that poor sleep quality increases hoarding tendencies, mediated by lower perceived social connections and heightened negative affect. To test these predictions, we conducted three studies. Study 1a (N = 308) found a strong negative relationship between poor sleep quality and hoarding behavior. Study 1b (N = 312) replicated this result in a UK sample. Study 2 (N = 304) further demonstrated that perceived social connections and negative affect mediate the relationship between sleep quality and hoarding behavior. Ongoing longitudinal Study 3 will test these effects in a young Asian sample and examine maladaptive digital hoarding. Together, these studies deepen our understanding of how sleep quality influences social dynamics and maladaptive consumption behaviors. We hope to provide specific policy guidelines for consumers and policymakers.
